How Microsoft plans to exploit the licensing opportunity through Nokia’s patents
Navi Mumbai, India -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/05/2013 -- With news of Microsoft’s purchase of Nokia’s Devices & Services Business starting to sink in, the question on everyone’s mind is ‘why’. Nokia has made Windows phone the fastest growing mobile platform with 78% y-o-y growth. On the acquisition conference call, Steve Ballmer stated that it made sense for them to have their own phones to ensure a Windows phone presence. In terms of phone hardware, he went on to state that “Nokia is a first rate company when it comes to device design and engineering”.
On what they would be gaining from the licensing front, he went on to state earlier in the call that “we are licensing Nokia's patents to be able to use them not only with our Windows phone and other phone product lines but across the Microsoft product set... we are licensing the ability to use Nokia's HERE mapping geospatial location”.
Around 8,500 design patents would be transferred from Nokia to Microsoft through the deal. Two major transfers would be the Asha and Lumia brands.
At their end, Nokia’s management too held a conference call on the same day to comment on the deal. Their CFO went on to say the deal would “provide a solid basis for future investment in Nokia's continuing businesses”.
