San Diego, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/29/2017 -- A consumer who used his insurance to purchased a generic durg at his local Walgreens filed a lawsuit against Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) over so called clawbacks.

According to the complaint the consumer used his insurance to purchase a certain generic durg and was forced to pay more than double what he would have been charged at the pharmacy if he would have paid cash. Walgreens allegedly never told the consumer that paying in cash would allow him to pay 54% less for the drug.

The plaintiff claims that Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc is profiting by charging customers with insurance more for generic drugs than what they would have paid if they had not presented an insurance card and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc is doing this because agreements with pharmacy benefit managers — which act as middlemen between pharmacies and insurance companies.

Furthermore, the consumer alleges that consumers are forced to pay pre-determined copays for medications even if the medications cost less at the cash price than the copays. The plaintiff says that the extra money goes to the pharmacy and some of it goes to the pharmacy benefit manager.
