Onity Proposes Two Solutions to Secure Its Hotel Keycards from Being Hacked Reports ValueLockSmith.c

They introduced two comprehensive approaches, both which require a partial mechanical replacement. In order to apply this, it is costing the hotels an extensive amount of cash.

Last month in a Black Hat conference, which was held in Las Vegas, Mozilla’s software developer demonstrated hack against the hotel keycard. He just used an Arduimo micro-controller which costs about $50 and came up with an effective hack against the hotel keycard.

It is said that there are a few main factors, due to which the hack becomes possible. One is due to the ability of the memory location to read on multiple electro-mechanical locks and second is due to the flawed cryptography in the keycards.

Apart from all this, it is still unclear how much the widely used Onity keycards will cost the hotels and whether Onity is going to pay for it. This has given rise to a new criticism that has been voiced over that hotel chains that will have to pay in order for the upgrades for technology which is not in compliance with them being at fault.

Brocious, the software developer for Mozilla said, “Given that it won’t be a low cost endeavor, it’s not hard to imagine that many hotels will choose not to properly fix the issues, leaving customers in danger,” according to theregister.co.uk

According to a report, it is estimated that Onity’s keycard is secure and is being used by almost 4 million hotel rooms around the world. Brocious also mentioned that he felt it being only right to give a demonstration about the Black Hat hack before giving a warning to Onity.
