Orange County Looks to Further Restrict Smokers' Rights

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/01/2012 -- Broader-sweeping rules regarding smoking are being considered in Orange County by its Board of Health. The bans will apply to bus stops and public sidewalks, as well as other public places.

The Orange County Board of Health recently reviewed research regarding tobacco use and secondhand smoke. The review sparked the interest in broadening current 2012-2014 plan on where one can smoke.

The rule will ban smoking in county and town buildings, vehicles, and government grounds, as well as most public places. This rule would take effect July 1, 2013 if passed. Those who are found in violation of the new law would be fined $25.

The Board of Health will meet to review the initial survey responses in case modifications are necessary to the draft rules. The county attorney’s office will then update a version of the draft rule. The public will also be asked to provide input to the rule.

The 2010 NC Smoke-Free Restaurants and Bars Law allows any local government to adopt and enforce smoke-free ordinances that are larger-sweeping and more comprehensive than the current state laws. This rule applies to laws involving government building, grounds, local vehicles, and public places.

Increases in lung cancer, heart disease, and other severe ailments have been linked to secondhand smoke, giving precedent for those who wish to apply vigorous bans on smoking in public areas. Nonsmokers are as likely to be affected by secondhand smoke as smokers are.
