Campbell, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/10/2013 -- Studies indicate that listening to music can release dopamine, which is responsible for pleasure. Music is a natural healer and has the ability to bring comfort to the soul and spirit. Many new songs are springing up in reference to the recent Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, with the hope of expediting the healing process.

Artist Miss Kristin has recently released an mp3 single for free download, to benefit all who have been affected by the Newtown calamity. The song “Only God Knows Why” was composed by Carolyn Neill, who after hearing of the tragedy, was moved to tears with pencil and paper to write the inspired and touching song. Miss Kristin produces and sings the soothing track which is helping to lift depression, and bring peace to people with unanswered questions. A review of literature on music therapy by Koelsch (2009) reveals music can automatically capture attention and may distract thought from negative experiences such as pain, anxiety, worry and sadness. Dopamine is a feel-good chemical with a neurotransmitter associated with the pleasure system of the brain. It is responsible for both motivation and addiction. Even anticipating the sound of music is known to trigger the release of dopamine, according to a recent study published in Nature Neuroscience (2011).

Music therapy reportedly improved moods and mental state. Studies have proven there is significant reduction in depression among participants who were selected at random to music therapy, compared to those receiving standard care conditions. Music has also been used to address the needs of patients with traumatic brain injuries. In a book by Gilbertson and Aldrige and reviewed by Wright (2008), music therapy was found to be effective as a rehabilitative treatment for patients who were initially considered unreachable or non-responsive. This is proven in comprehensive studies of clients who were thought to be in a vegetative state but were able to react to music and subsequently indicated the ability to communicate.

Big Fuss Records Inc. is distributing the song and encourages people to share it in compassion for those who lost their lives. https://soundcloud.com/big-fuss-records/only-god-knows-why
