Electronic cigarettes may well get banned by Pinella County School after a recent case in which an 18 year old student was expelled after using e cigarette at school.
Dallas, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/22/2013 -- Electronic cigarettes use at school in Pinellas led to expulsion of an 18 year old student which has prompted Pinellas county school leaders to hold a discussion to add e cigarettes in its already existent policy which prohibit tobacco and nicotine use on school property and at events sponsored by school. Public can address this issue at 5 pm in the school administration building, 301 fourth St. S.W. in Largo.
Tuesday the school board members will discuss what regulations to be imposed on vapor cigarettes, Mary Beth Corace, Pinellas County Schools’ director of strategic planning and policy, says, “school district also began receiving calls about school policies on the devices as they became more popular, Most Florida school districts have banned e cigarettes or are in the process of doing so, and policymakers across the country have advised schools to ban them.”
Teenage smoking is an issue which is a concern amongst many health regulators who don’t want that any minor should be able to buy electronic cigarette i.e. it should not be so easy to get to that a minor can buy them. Corace further added that this move is to protect public health and also to make sure that no students can use electronic cigarettes to get around smoking bans. School Board member Robin Wikle says,” I guess it’s the mom in me that thinks that if they’re using e cigarettes they must be trying to stop smoking, and that’s a very positive thing; but as a rule setting School Board member, I know we can’t make any exceptions for anything tobacco-related on school property.”
Most of the electronic cigarette brands commend e cigarette use by minors and most of them observe minors do not enter policy on their website. In recent times there have been cases where city council members have passed ordinance against e cigarette. Experts at DigitalSmoke.org say,” It is very important that minors cannot get a way in to use any such product but at the same time a comprehensive ban is not something that might come as a good news for e cigarette enthusiast who feel that e cig should remain accessible to adult smokers who are benefitting or might benefit from e cigarette."
