Important for teams to test the characteristics of the tires
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/02/2012 -- The Formula 1 teams are set to test the Pirelli’s 2013-spec tires in a trial of its new rubber during the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend, according to AUTOSPORT.
Pirelli is planning an overhaul on its products for the next season. It will have a stiffer construction set to offer teams that are a more predictable platform than previous years.
The new characteristics could make a large impact on the design of the cars for next year. Pirelli is set to give two tire sets for each car for Friday’s practice at Interlagos.
Ross Brawn, Mercedes team’s principal, believes that the test in Brazil will be highly important in order to prepare for 2013. He states the belief based upon the importance of the important it was in understanding tires for this year’s F1 Championship.
"The tires appear as though they are going to be quite a lot different," he explained. "They [Pirelli] are calling them more a radial than the current tire, but we don't know enough detail about the construction yet.
"The numbers they are giving us show that there is a softer construction, although the compounds I gather will be quite similar...so we are expecting quite a different tire for next year. That is why the test in Brazil on Friday is so important."
The actual shape of tires will be identical to the year, the new stiff construction will mean that they will behave differently under load,. This factor makes it vital that teams get an early indicator of the impact it will have on performance and aerodynamics.
"The shapes are not dramatically different but the way the tire will move or distort under load will be different," added Brawn. " So the loaded shape will be different, and we have to get into that and understand what is happening. There will also be new wind tunnel tires to represent the new tires."
