San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/01/2013 -- Everyone knows that surgery can be a scary proposition for most people; however, when it comes to plastic surgery, a new study is suggesting that more and more people are finding it acceptable to willingly put themselves under the knife.

According to the third annual meeting, the “Global Study of Aesthetic/Cosmetic Surgery” Procedures Performed in 2011' conducted by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, lipoplasty still remained the most sought-after surgical procedure.

Lipoplasty, which is not to be confused with liposuction, utilizes sound waves to liquefy unwanted fat beneath the skin's surface before it can is suctioned out of the body. The study found that the procedure is sought after 19.9% of the time one goes in for surgical procedure. Botox, which is a form of botulism utilized to paralyze the face, is used 39.1`% of the non-surgical procedures utilizes.

When it comes to going under the knife for the nip and/or tuck, certain countries continue to appear on the lists produced. In 2011, the United States has the most plastic surgeons, the most cosmetic procedures, and was the top in lipoplasty, breast augmentation, blepharoplasty, and tummy tucks.

The study noted that there was a major divide occurring as well. While the augmenting of breasts were the rage in North American and European countries, lipoplasty was the more requested surgery in South America and Asia.

One thing that was universal across the globe was that plastic surgery was still highly sought after. The procedures are becoming more aggressively marketed and available to a wider audience, but that has the potential of doing more harm than good. The U.K. Sought to create stricter regulations regarding cosmetic plastic surgery, only to have the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons' president, Rajiv Brover, argue that it ought be classified as a medical procedure. That classification makes it much more difficult to lay restrictions on.

"It's an operation, which would have risks as well as some benefits, and the whole presentation of that package should be going back to a medical procedure, rather than a commodity," he said in an interview.
