Glass Group Corning (NYSE:GLW), Friday said its third-quarter net profit had fallen 45% on the year to USD 97 million (EUR 75.2m). The company's performance since the start of 2012 has been hit by oversupply in both the silicone and polycrystalline silicon sectors and high raw material prices, it said, adding that these industry conditions would possibly last into 2013. Adjusted net income plunged 56% to USD 77 million. Sales fell 7% to USD 1.55 billion as polysilicon prices remained weak due to industry oversupply. Sales in Europe dropped due to continuing economic volatility. The low polysilicon prices and political uncertainty in the solar sector affected the performance of polycrystalline silicon and other silicon-based products supplier Hemlock Semiconductor Group, which is comprised of joint ventures formed by Dow Corning, Shin-Etsu Handotai and Mitsubishi Materials (TYO:5711), Dow Corning said.
