Stay Quit Mondays attempts to give social reinforcement to those quitting
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/14/2013 -- A new campaign titled ‘Stay Quit Mondays’ is offering smokers a list of inspirational reasons to quit the filthy habit of smoking.
The Monday Campaign is hoping smokers come down to kick off the new year in a clean and healthy manner. It is also why this year it is expanding the Quit and Stay Quit Monday campaign to Facebook and Twitter,. The campaign was first launched in 2008.
The campaign, with the tag “recommit to quit,” was started as a social media presence in November of 2012. It has slowly been building its following, and gathered 41 likes on Facebook and 50 followers on Twitter.
The group has focused on health efforts, which include exercise oriented works like “Move More Mondays” as well as the consumption oriented “Meatless Mondays”.
The reason for Mondays? Research shows that seem to want to change their habits and lifestyle on that day more than any other in the week, according to Bloomberg School of Public Health results.
Project Director Cherry Dumaual stated that a key concept for all health initiatives is the gathering of starting points that help reinforce positive change on a regular basis.
By pairing up with John Hopkins, Columbia and Syracuse Universities, the New York-based team is working with larger organizations, including SmokeFree.Gov.
My goal is to build partnerships with organizations like the Alzheimer's Association, Girl Scouts. We also want to make sure we just don't reach only health organizations . . . [because groups like] the Girl Scouts and Health Organizations are very concerned with health. Who isn't these days?” Dumaual told MM&M.
As of now the outreach includes the traditional forms as well as social forms. According to Dumaual, the group is hoping to ultimately expand the program to include text messaging as well.
As of now, the push for social media is the key, and Dumaual stated it is an excellent place for social reinforcement. “It's something that's like a friend reminding you ‘hey, take care of yourself this week,'" or serve as a reminder that “you have a friend on social media who has your back, who's taking care of you.”
