Doylestown, PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/12/2017 -- On August 30, 2017, approximately 350 people arrived on Ellis Island to experience the U.S. Mint's official launch ceremony for the unveiling of a new coin - the 2017 Ellis Island National Monument quarter dollar. This coin is the 39th in a series of 56 to be released as a part of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. Two days earlier, the new quarter was put into general circulation by the Federal Reserve Banks and the participating financial institutions. On the same day, the U.S. Mint started to supply circulation quality examples of these quarter dollars in both 100-coin bags and 40-coin rolls from the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints. Although, only the coins produced in the Philadelphia and Denver Mints are being released into general circulation.
The Ellis Island coin was designed by Barbara Fox, the U.S. Mint's Artistic Infusion Program artist. She attended the ceremony and was duly recognized for her contribution, happy to sign autographs for many lucky collectors on the scene. Some numismatists asked that Fox sign the paper wrappers of the rolled coins they received after the ceremony during the coin exchange. Fox's reverse design, depicting an immigrant family arriving on Ellis Island with mixed feelings of hope and worry, was created by U.S. Mint Medallic Sculptor Phebe Hemphill.
