Community helps to boost Arrowhead Elementary project by raising thousands
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/16/2012 -- As the community banded together, in an effort to raise money for the Arrowhead Elementary playground, the PTA managed to bring in $30,000 to help in the purchase and installation of large structures to cover the school’s playgrounds from the heat of the sun.
2011-12 school year PTA President at Arrowhead, Becky Dunn, stated that she first came up with this idea to add a little shade to the playground while her son was attending kindergarten at the school. When she noticed the children playing on the burning hot plastic and metal playground equipment, she just knew that it was crucial to add a covering over it to protect the kids from the sun, and to make it a safer area to play.
According to TheSpectrum.com, Dunn said, “Now that we have the shades, I notice those areas of the playground that used to be right under the sun are getting used a lot more now. It’s a safety issue and now they are not getting burned on the playground.”
The Arrowhead Principal Susan Harrah was extremely impressed by the action and support that was taken on by the PTA and the community. “They’ve worked so hard,” she said. “Now the students get to really enjoy the playground all around.”
Dunn did say that she was surprised by the support for the PTA when she first began putting together her idea for fundraising money for the $30,000 cost of two shades and their installation . Community members, local members, and parents of students at the school all supported the cause. “We really planned for this project,” she said. “We made it our purpose because we knew if we didn’t start really working on it, it was something that would continually get pushed back on the priority list.”
Along with all the different fundraisers that went on throughout the school year, there were also numerous donations from parents and community members, as well support from local businesses, Dunn said. The PTA was also given a $5,000 grant from Lowes Toolbox for Education program that went towards the project as well.
The shades made their way onto the playground during the summer and Dunn said that she really enjoyed watching the project come together and reach completion. They are anticipated to last for years to come and will be beneficial year round.
