The Center for Surgical Innovation at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital Becomes First in Virginia to Complete Eight Gynecological Surgeries in One Day Using the Da Vinci Robot

Richmond, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/04/2010 -- The Center for Surgical Innovation at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital broke new ground in robotic surgery by completing seven hysterectomies and one fibroid myomectomy to become the first hospital in the state to complete this many gynecological surgeries in one day on June 29, 2010. Six of the procedures were performed by Dr. Danny Shaban and two of the procedures were performed by Dr. Thomas Mead.

“For women facing a hysterecomtomy, the da Vinci Robotic System® offers a less invasive procedure, faster recovery time and less scarring,” said Dr. Danny Shaban. “From a surgical viewpoint, it offers more precision and accuracy ultimately allowing us as physicians to be more efficient.”

The da Vinci Surgical System is operated by a surgeon sitting a few feet away from the patient at a console. Using a high-powered camera, the surgeon guides the arms of the robot that hold surgical tools that are inserted into the patient through small, keyhole-sized incisions. The da Vinci instruments allow the surgeon to move his own hands - and the robot’s – to conduct precise movements with extraordinary control and range of motion. The da Vinci’s video monitoring system provides a three-dimensional view of the surgery with magnification ten times that of the naked eye.

“It’s a great credit to the skill set of the surgeons and the whole OR Team that they were able to orchestrate eight highly successful surgeries over the course of one day,” said Patrick Farrell, CEO of Henrico Doctors’ Hospital.
