In making the move Tinney said, "Internet based distribution gives me more flexibility, more listeners and more freedom".
Tinney is the latest of a long list of "Talkers" moving to the Internet, iTunes, Google Play and other distribution methods with their shows. Most industry insiders say the seed was planted back in 2005 when Howard Stern left Terrestrial radio opting instead for Sirius Satellite Network. He was given a 100 million dollar production budget and escaped the threat of fines by the FCC for violating decency standards.
In 2005, when Stern made the move to Sirius there were an estimated 50 million monthly, digital, radio listeners. According to Statista (Statista.com) there are roughly 170 million digital listeners today and that number is expected to grow to an estimated 191 million by 2019.
In the past many shows would start on the Internet with the intention of moving to more traditional radio platforms on public airwaves. Today, the Internet is the final destination as hosts seek to garner a bigger audience from a new generation of listeners consuming more and more content online.

Without the need to target a specific demographic Tinney says he's able to cover a broader range of topics saying, "last week I interviewed Bruce Perlowin, the CEO of Hemp Inc., a publicly traded company dedicated to legalizing hemp production in the United States. This month I'll have Keith McHenry the Founder of Food Not Bombs and Scott Miller, the Founder of Circles USA. Traditional radio can't offer that range of topics because they have to create content for the listeners of their particular station. In short, I'm able to give my listeners the shows and topics they want and not the shows mandated by a program director".
