First foray into 3D and largest budget for Harlin after decade with smaller projects
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/11/2013 -- Renny Harlin, the veteran director of such classics as Die Hard 2 and Cutthroat Island, is preparing himself for direction of the upcoming “Hercules 3D” film for Millenia Pictures. Millennium and Harlin have come together for the project which has an aimed release date of March of 2014, as they attempt to beat the rival film which is under the same name. That rival film is being directed by Brett Ratner and stars Dwayne Johnson, and is scheduled for an August release in 2014.
Harlin told the Hollywood Reporter that his film is “not a comic book, cartoon fantasy thing,” and added “It is closer to 'Gladiator' than flying horses.” The director always downplayed the talks of a rivalry between Ratner/Johnson regarding the Hercules film, stating "I think these are very different kinds of movies in their approach to this legendary character. Obviously, Hercules has been portrayed in many different films, such as the Disney animated movie. I wish them luck. Ancient Greek mythology is an endless source of good stories ... Let's see both movies be successful."
Just as Harlin alluded to, Hercules has been the subject of a large assortment of films over the years, and has been portrayed by bodybuilders like Steve Reeves and Lou Ferrigno. The physical feats that are involved in the Hercules fabled 12 labors makes for someone of great physical strength to take the role, and the right leading man is needed. There is no word yet on who Harlin will showcase in his picture.
“Hercules 3D” will be Harlin's largest budgeted film to date in his career that has seen him on smaller stages in the last decade. It will also be his first foray into 3D film. Millennium chairman Avi Lerner stated, "Now that we have a strong script, a very talented director and the prospect of an exciting cast, we’re ready to move forward with the project."
