Since 2007 the law has been that only people over the age of eighteen can purchase realistic imitation firearms that look real, but in addition to this said people must also meet at least one of the following requirements:

- Be a registered airsofter holding a membership from an insured skirmish site
- Be a member of UKARA or smiler society
- Be part of a correctly insured historical re-enactment society or club
- Be part of a theatre, film or TV company
- Be acting on behalf of a museum
- Be a Crown Servant in pursuance of Crown duties

Anyone who does not meet these requirements can still buy imitation firearms, however they must choose options that are different in colour such as blue, green or bright orange.
