Meditation may improve the quality of life for senior citizens
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/12/2012 -- A recent study has suggested some interesting facts especially for the older people of society who often lead their lives in disease and loneliness. According to the study, a certain meditation technique may reduce chronic inflammation, loneliness, and the risk of getting diseases, which can improve the quality of life for the person.
Now it has become a growing fact that the older people are sometimes forced to lead their lives alone after their partners pass away and their children move away for their own careers and families. In this situation, the loneliness not only brings a lot of mental pressure to the senior citizen, but the physical condition also gets affected as the risk of catching diseases increases due to depression which sometimes results in a premature death.
The claim of meditation reducing loneliness and disease risk came on the back of a research conducted by the professor of medicine and psychiatry, Steve Cole, at the University of California in Los Angeles.
The study examined forty adults in between the ages of 55 to 85 who took part in an eight-week program, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). The purpose of the program was to make the participant think about their present instead of dwelling into the past or thinking about the future. The participants mediated for thirty minutes a day.
After the study was completed, it was revealed that the feeling of loneliness decreased dramatically among the participants. These changes in feeling lonely also changed genes and protein makers related to inflammation. Steve Cole explained that if further research can be done in this field, the effects can be for a longer period as meditation can help in improving the quality of life for the senior citizen.
"Our work presents the first evidence showing that a psychological intervention that decreases loneliness also reduces pro-inflammatory gene expression. If this is borne out by further research, MBSR could be a valuable tool to improve the quality of life for many elderly people." Cole said, according to medicaldaily.com.
