Kiosk owners are sure to go out of business with no alcohol or tobacco sales
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/08/2013 -- It appears that Russia is prepared to go through with a smoking ban in public areas. The ban has been set forth by President Vladimir Putin, and the plan is slated as making citizen healthier, live longer, and help the economy.
In a national that holds one of the highest global smoking rates, the law will mean that smoking will be slowly banned throughout different areas in local Russian live, including work, subways, restaurants, cafes, ships, and trains. The bill was passed by parliament recently, and signed by Putin. It goes into effect in June of 2013.
The legislation has also banned advertising and sponsorships of events by any tobacco company.
The law was opposed by foreign firms such as British American Tobacco, Imperial Tobacco, Japan Tobacco, as well as Phillip Morris. The companies together control nearly 90% of the total of Russian cigarette purchases, which is worth an estimated £13.2 billion in annual revenue.
Putin is apparently aiming to force millions of Russians to make lifestyle changes, which can be difficult to do in a country that is often filled with a haze of cigarette smoke in areas like restaurants, bars, and cafes. There are an estimated 40% of Russians who are classified as regular smokers, according to the world bank.
A Russian businessman, Grigory, stated: “I'm categorically against this stupid ban. Smoking is heavily restricted now anyway. No smoking in offices, no smoking in staircases, nowhere.” Adding, “I'll go out even less now as there's nowhere to go for us chain-smokers.”
The law will come in phases and not in a single fell-swoop action. Sales for tobacco products will be forbidden on street kiosks on June 1, along with advertising cigarettes will be restricted and minimum prices being set for the products.
Owners of ubiquitous kiosks, say they will likely go out of business without the sales of cigarettes being allowed. This is especially true for those who have already been hit hard by alcohol restrictions.
