San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/11/2013 -- While many companies experience the pangs of the Syrian turmoil in their bottom line, one company is see a positive trend because of the ongoing conflict.
Thuraya, a satellite telecommunications provider has reported a respectable surge in the demand for its phones within the country. In fact, the demand has grown so high that the company is now experiencing a shortage of supply.
"We are working around the clock to satisfy the requirements of Syria," said Muiz Saad, the vice president of distribution at Thuraya. "There has been a lot of demand after the communications blackout."
Since the start of the conflict, president Bashar Al Assad has been removing the mobile networks in an effort to quell activists and Free Syrian Army from communicating effectively. The most recent attempt was in internet and communications outage on November 29 that lasted through December 1.
"Thuraya was available to fill in for GSM [global system for mobile communications] and people have been relying on us for support," said Mr Saad.
While the communications company does not have a presence directly in Syria, it has bee able to supply the country through distribution partners at the border.
The company noticed a 40% increase in traffic networks in the wider Mid-East area within the previous fiscal year.
The UAE-based partner of Thuraya has posted a 50% increase in sales of prepaid cards that are being utilized to make calls on Thuraya. Most of the activity is noted as stemming from Syria.
The demand is primarily fueled by the NGO (non-governmental organizations) media outlets and the rebellion army.
Along with the satellite phones, Thuraya provides intern service, which helps create uninterrupted access to the internet through desktop, laptop, and handheld devices.
"The Syrian government has interfered a lot, but we have managed to overcome this," said Mr Saad.
"The technical team is working to make sure the network is secure and working on the ground. The government wanted us to stop the service, but we never did. They tried to stop the Thuraya network."
