In fact this is the same software that was used to attack Facebook. It works by exploiting a flaw in a version of Oracle Corp's Java software used as a plug-in on Web browsers. Even Twitter was not spared as it revealed that it had been attacked on February 1st and the hackers might have gained information of about 250,000 users. There is a theory that the malware might come from China, but no proof has been found yet.

It is unknown when the attacks began, the degree to which the hackers have been able to penetrate the targeted or if all infected machines have been detected. The malware was distributed at least in part through a site aimed at iPhone developers, which might still be infecting visitors who haven't disabled Java in their browser. A version that infects computers running Microsoft Windows is out as well.

Security firm F-Secure said that the hackers might want to gain access to the code for apps on smartphones, seeking a way to infect millions of end-users. Developers have been asked to re-check the source code for unintended modifications.
