ITS-NY Announces 2009 Project-of-the-year Winners

 

Saratoga Springs, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/23/2009 -- ITS-NY has announced the 2009 Project-of-the-Year Winners at its Sixteenth Annual Meeting in Saratoga Springs, NY.

The winning projects highlight the use of ITS technologies to improve the mobility and safety of NYS travelers, enhance the efficiency of NYS transportation network and modes including public transportation, and provide positive environmental and energy benefits to NYS. These outstanding projects also have a high degree of multiagency coordination and collaboration. Winning Projects were announced in the following six ITS award categories:

• TRAVELER INFORMATION SYSTEMS - NYS 511 Project by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), and team members Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Telvent, provides a single statewide platform for multimodal traveler information to meet the needs of commuters, long-distance and local travelers, tourists and commercial-vehicle operators. The system is also a critical, single-point information source for transportation emergencies.
• TRANSPORTATION MANAGEMENT - The Joint Traffic Management Center is a new state-of-the-art center which, among many things, monitors and manages incidents utilizing ITS technologies. The multi-team member initiative involved the NYSDOT, the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT), the New York Police Department, FHWA, Jacobs Civil Consultants, Inc., JHK Engineering PC/TransCore ITS LLC, Parsons, and VidSys, Inc.
• TRANSIT INFORMATION SYSTEMS - The MTA New York City Transit’s Train Locator Console system generates a real-time display of all of the train locations along the “L” Canarsie subway line in New York City. The project demonstrates a low cost approach to providing real time transit information.
• TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT - NYCDOT’s Advanced Solid-State Traffic Controller Project modernized the local traffic controllers in New York City, and has been the largest, most ambitious modernization program in US history in its scale and the impact on the public travel reliability and the quality of life for the 8 million New Yorkers and 5 million commuters which use the facilities of the City each day. NYCDOT’s Project Team Members included FHWA, Greenman Pedersen Inc., JHK Engineering PC/TransCore ITS LLC, KLD Associates, Inc., and Peek Traffic Corp.
• COMMERCIAL VEHICLE OPERATIONS - The Comparative Assessment of Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) Technology Study performed by Project Team Members NYSDOT, the I-95 Corridor Coalition, the FHWA, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and Clough Harbour & Associates assessed various WIM technologies, an important integrated component of roadside commercial vehicle electronic screening (e-screening) based systems. Since most commercial vehicle electronic screening safety operations involve numerous statewide e-screening sites with many roadside devices costing significant monies, this study assessed WIM technologies based on real world, field based evaluation.
• SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES – The iCone and Work Zone Speed Study utilized the innovative iCone ITS application as part of NYSDOT’s Work Zone Speed Study to obtain critical data in work zones as the first step in understanding how effective existing work zone procedures are and how to improve upon such deployment efforts. Project Team Members included NYSDOT, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, the FHWA, and iCone Products LLC.
