If you own a cell phone, which most people probably do, you are in threath of a cell phone scam that send text messages to your cell phone to get personal information.
Rita Torres was a victim of such a scam. She received a late night text and her husband called the number and got an automated operator. He then called Bank of America’s published 800 number.
Rita said, "He calls Bank of America, getting this text message and they said the number is not affiliated with us and just be cautious."
The automated machine operator says the first few numbers of the credit card and then asks the caller to enter in the rest of the numbers. A lot of banks have the same first few numbers of the credit cards and so this can mislead the victim to think that they are actually calling an official bank number.
Monica Russo with the Houston Better Business Bureau says that if consumers do not know, they could be fooled into providing the rest of the card number and hence, becoming a victim of credit card scam.
"They know that a lot of people do not realize that they share the first several digits of their cards with thousands of others out there, so they think the call is specifically geared towards them," Russo explained. Russo also added that, "I think we will see more of this in the future."
