Seven Miami Artist Speak Up About Gentrification with a Group Exhibit in Little Haiti

During Miami's Art week, Mitte presented Metaxy, a group exhibit featuring the work of artist Derek Hunter, Vickie Pierre, Michelle Lisa Pollisaint, Carolina Sardi, Serge Toussaint and the artist collective Poncili Creación in the context of Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood.

Miami, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/10/2018 -- M E T A X Y: a unique experience with site-specific installations and murals throughout the neighborhood that were visible and open to the public.

In front of the Spanish Colonial Revival architecture of St. Mary's Cathedral, artist Derek Hunter created a wood and vinyl installation titled Lakay - meaning at home in Creole, where he references the sanctity of the home in relationship to its community.

A few blocks south, Argentinian sculptor Carolina Sardi created a mixed media installation from found objects titled Utopia / Give Me Shelter, that drew from her own experience as an immigrant trying to adapt to the changes and transformation of her new reality. The installation started from inside her studio an extended to the outer parts of the building.

At the corner of 54 and 1st street, renowned Haitian muralist Serge Toussaint created a mural, La Belle Vue, with intent to show the beautiful scenery of the Caribbean and Marabou woman as opposed to the thoughts of a suffering and hunger-stricken Caribbean.

Also in this street is a mural by artist Vickie Pierre - The Elements Will Bind Us Together - whose compositions allude to biological and botanical structures while maintaining base sentiments of femininity, beauty, romanticism, and decadence.

Just a few walking steps from these murals, Poncili Creacion, intervened a humble home in the neighborhood by erecting a rainbow of recycled foam titled - Esperanza en el Aire (Hope in the Air).

Ultimately, artist Michelle Lisa Polissaint brought us Ansanm (meaning together in Kreyol) a cultural project that aims to bring the arts to Miami's diverse working class through community-based events centered around greatest equalizer: "food".

Each of this seven artists positions manifests a different view regarding becoming, being and only when they exist apart from their inheritance in a newly conjoined created liminal world they are able to connect with the displacement and transformation that Little Haiti is undergoing.
