Help a talented young Florida percussionist travel with her high school band to England to play at the 2014 London New Year’s Day Parade and Festival.
Tallahassee, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/20/2013 -- Emily Beale is the single mother of a very talented 16-year-old percussionist named Luna. Luna was given her first drum at the age of 6 months and has been a percussionist ever since. She started formal lessons in West African drumming at about age seven, and has since learned to play many more instruments and styles of percussion, including djembe, congas, cymbals, steel pan, drum set, cajon, and now bass drum. She now plays second bass on the drum line for her high school marching band, the Leon High School Marching Redcoats.
On January 1, 2014, the band will be one of 12 high school and college marching bands representing the United States in the London New Year’s Day Parade. With a half-million live spectators, and more than 280 million viewers worldwide, this is the largest event of its kind. The invitation came as a surprise to the students in September, when Deputy Lieutenant of London Roger Bramble and other representatives of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, stopped by the school for a brief band exhibition and to personally extend the invitation.
In order to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, each student must raise $3000 for travel and lodging expenses, plus the cost of a passport, meals, etc. coming to a grand total of about $3800. This amount of money is far, far beyond Emily’s means as a single parent of two children. Luna's father is very supportive, both personally and financially, and Emily is employed full time as a nurse on a hospital labor and delivery floor. Despite the efforts of Luna's dad and their mutual willingness to work overtime to make extra money, a trip like this is still out of Luna's reach.
This campaign will receive all funds raised even if it does not reach its goal. Funding duration: August 10, 2013 - October 02, 2013 (11:59pm PT).
