Indian Researcher Finds Himself in Hot Water Again
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/21/2013 -- WordPress has pulled down 10 blog posts that were posted on Retraction Watch, a website that tracks retractions from scientific research papers. The pull came after a news site based in India complained the it had violated the U.S. Copyright law by plagiarizing the posts.
Ivan Oransky, who is an executive editor for the Reuters Health, whore in a blog that the posts Tuesday were about former Duke University cancer researcher Anil Potti, and were originally created by Retraction Watch. He refutes that they were not first created by NewsBulet.In.
Oransky confirmed his suspicions that Retraction Watch had been plagiarized following being notified of a Digital Millennium Copyright Act that issued a copyright notice from WordPress' parent company.
“If you click on any of the NewsBulet. In URLs provided in the takedown notice, you will indeed find the text — and images — from ten of our posts about Anil Potti. But as will be abundantly clear to anyone who does so that our text was placed on NewsBulet. In, not the other way around,” wrote Oransk
“That’s driven home by the fact that the site did not exist until October 2012, according to a WhoIs search. All but one of the Retraction Watch posts they cite appeared before they even existed,” said Oransky.
This is not the first time Potti has been involved with controversy, as the Indian-born professional was the subject of controversy in 2011 over his embellishing of his resume and research.
Potti had hired an online Reputation Manager to establish websites that praised his work in order to counter negative press about him. A notice from GoDaddy on the Online Reputation Manager, however reads that the domain name expired, and thus was deleted.
The domain is registered toward a Domain by Proxy, LLC, which has an anonymous domain registration site.
“We have responded to Automattic with a counter-notice, and look forward to a speedy resolution of this situation, beginning with the Potti posts being reinstated,” he said.
