According to a report by Elle Magazine, newly popularized, anti-oxidant rich liquids that look like nothing more than water are taking the beauty counter by storm. Dr. Simon Ourian of Epione Medical Corporation comments on these super-hydrating vitamin and nutrient drenched products that help lock moisture back into the skin.
Beverly Hills, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/25/2014 -- In an article entitled “Liquid Assets: The Top Face Essences,” posted on the website of Elle Magazine, it’s reported that as we age, skin loses elasticity, causing the appearance of wrinkles. This has much to do with hydration. The body is largely comprised of water, but we lose it easily, especially in the epidermis. Drinking water and keeping the body hydrated helps a lot: by consuming adequate amounts of water, and not exposing skin to the sun, the loss of elasticity can be lessened. (See: goo.gl/3KwKpw)
“Though they've been around in some form for generations, especially in Asia, only lately have essences become appreciated for their ability to get moisture through the outer layers of the epidermis to where it is really needed,” says Dr. Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills. “Unlike thick creams which largely stay on the surface, these essences absorb quickly through the layers.”
Locking moisture back into the skin can be achieved with essences that are "pressed" onto the face and neck. Unlike a pH balancing toner, which is applied with a pad or cotton ball, essences are poured into the hands and pressed into the skin. The action of pressing with the hands of the essence to the skin increases its absorption. In addition, skin is stimulated by the pressing, increasing circulation and plumping the surface.
After a few weeks of twice-daily treatment, the change is visible. Pores are smaller, wrinkles are firmed up, and spots from environmental damage like the sun are noticeably lighter, thanks to the amino-acids contained in the essence.
This process takes longer than simply slathering on a moisturizer every morning and night. Twenty or more presses are needed with each application. In the Far East, women press essences to their skin up to 100 times. Someone looking to turn back the hands of time won't likely be bothered by the extra steps in their daily beauty rituals.
This doesn't mean throwing away moisturizer, though. Once that hydration is under the epidermis, it's important to lock it in with an impermeable cream or lotion. This will keep that moisture from depleting throughout the day or night, and contribute to softness and surface smoothness. Essences are just one more powerful step in the fight against the appearance of aging.
“Finally,” says Dr. Ourian, “consistent use of high-SPF sunblock will help keep skin younger for longer, avoid spots, and also protect skin from harmful, cancer-causing UVA and UVB rays. Prevention is still the most powerful tool in the fight against aging skin.”
