Harper’s Bazaar recently reported that copper is being hyped for its supposed anti-aging properties. Dr. Simon Ourian of Epione Beverly Hills says that the promoters of copper-infused creams and products need to provide peer-reviewed scientific data to support their claims.
Beverly Hills, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/20/2014 -- According to a Harper’s Bazaar article posted on March 13, 2014, titled “Copper: The New Skin Saver,” copper has been used as an effective anti-aging ingredient for skin and hair care since the Pharaohs ruled Egypt. Some beauty experts believe copper helps heal and hydrate skin, and has anti-aging qualities. Copper moisturizer may also reduce the redness and flaking of skin caused by various facial treatments. “Copper may turn out to be another in a long line of skincare fads,” says Dr. Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Medical Corporation. ”Two or three times a year a series of news reports will tout the latest and greatest skincare ingredient. Last year it was gold dust that was added to cosmetics and topical creams.”
As reported in Harper’s, compared to other anti-aging ingredients, the science, safety, effectiveness, and clinical validation of copper makes it unique. Experts cited believe that copper increases luminosity and firmness without the risk of irritation associated with other types of treatments. Copper stimulates the skin's production of hyaluronic acid, elastin, and collagen; all of which ensures constant skin renewal and firmness. This, in effect, gets rid of freckles, scars, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Additionally, copper protects the skin from infections caused by fungi and bacteria due to its anti-fungal and antibacterial properties.
Beauty sleep is also getting a copper makeover. A Virginia-based copper technology developer recently invented and marketed a pillowcase embedded with tiny copper particles. The microscopic particles are reportedly absorbed by the skin while one sleeps. According to the manufacturer, product tests indicate a significant reduction in the number of wrinkles and fine lines after just one month of sleeping on the pillowcase.
The magical qualities of copper are even being applied to hair care. Most hair issues, including volume, texture, and shine, start with the scalp. Copper peptides in hair serum may stimulate the collagen in hair follicles, thereby promoting the growth of thick hair.
“I need to see peer-reviewed scientific data before I can recommend copper, or any ingredient, to my patients,” says Dr. Ourian, “I practice evidence-based medicine and the companies that are promoting copper for its anti-aging properties haven’t provided the data to back up all these claims.”
