New options for after surgery recovery
Houston, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/24/2013 -- Your Going to Sew me Up with Whaaat ?
Probably some of the grosser things in nature have to do with slime. Think slimy snails, slugs, worms, and my fave...the hagfish.
But these slimy substances are miracles of evolution that have evolved over the eons to fulfill very special functions.
Ever try and pull a limpet off a rock? Good luck, because these little guys stick with a Herculean force thanks to their slime which can quickly be converted to glue. That comes in handy , especially when there is a hungry seagull looking for some lunch.
But these natural glues are definitions of "green," "renewable," and "organic." Those are the kind of catchwords everybody seems to like today, right ? So if given a choice, wouldn’t you rather have something used on your body that Mother Nature herself a has created ?
The ingredients are simple…sugar and a little protein. Can’t get more natural than that, and I’m sure it’s all low-calorie too. These materials typically break down into simpler sugars and water. But seriously, there are a lot of problems with the manufactured products we use today in surgery. I ought to know, my average tummy tuck or body lift involves using hundreds of sutures !
Problems like allergy, rejection, or reaction to the stitches we use occur commonly enough to where I am actively looking for alternatives. The biological glues, as they are called, offer what may be a lower risk way to hold tissues together while they heal and not cause problems later.
So, anybody up for a slimy alternative to sutures?
