Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/10/2014 -- The category of smoking tobacco did not have a strong presence in the Croatian market before the economic crisis. However, a sudden drop in disposable income has made many turn to cheaper alternatives to cigarettes, in the form of RYO tobacco. Apart from the appeal of cheaper prices, earlier in the review period the tax hikes for other tobacco products were not applied to this category.

Competitive Landscape:

Local player Duhanka Zagreb doo continued to lead the category with a 51% volume share. From the previous year, its share declined by two percentage points. In 2013 the biggest chunk that was lost went to domestic player TDR doo, which ranked fifth.

Industry Prospects:

The biggest influence on the category in the forecast period will be taxation. In 2013-2018 the tax on smoking tobacco will be increasing. This will have two contrasting effects. On the one hand, price increases will motivate some consumers to quit or search for cheaper alternatives. On the other hand, the trend of cigarette consumers switching to smoking tobacco will continue. Even with price increases, smoking tobacco will remain the cheapest legal tobacco product on the market.
