Delays and cancellations continue as weather worsens
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/22/2013 -- Snowfall has caused delays across the United Kingdom, and London's Heathrow airport, the busiest hub in Europe, was forced to cancel 357 flights. Those canceling totaled 25% of the expected and scheduled, and more delays and cancellations are to be expected as the snowfall sweeps across Britain.
There are services between the hub's two runways that are allowing for plowing of the snow, as people due to fly are forced to wait out mother nature. Those who have flights in upcoming days are being asked to keep a frequent and keen eye on their flights status before they set out to drive to the airport, stated Heathrow Ltd in a statement.
London City Airport had to close briefly, as Charle de Gaulle will scarp nearly 20% of its flights over the day as the snow continues to push east.
The Met Office issued a “red” alert for the country of Wales, warning that there were areas that would see a foot of snow. British Airways, which is the largest operator at Heathrow, was forced to scrap its short-haul flights to many cities, including Paris, Barcelona, and Berlin.
