‘American Gangster’ training in case he gets a shot at Jones
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/29/2012 -- Jon Jones and Vitor Belfort are scheduled to contend in the Ultimate Fighting Championship light-heavyweight fight this weekend, but former Middleweight top contender, and current Light-heavyweight fighter Chael Sonnen is training in case he is called as a last-minute replacement.
“The American Gangster” is preparing for the possibility that Belfort will pull out of the Sept. 22 fight due to injury. UFC President Dana White confirmed to MMAJunkie.com that Sonnen is in training. “He’s been training since he got offered the Jones fight,” according to White. “He said,
I’m in full camp right now because Vitor will get hurt and pull out, and it will be Jones vs. Sonnen, anyway.’”
But Jones has refused to fight Sonnen before, when Sonnen was called to replace Dan Henderson in the UFC 151 fight card. At that time, Sonnen took his case to the media and got a chance to contend for UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion even though he had not fought in the division in more than four years.
It is thought by many that Jones and Sonnen is nearly inevitable. Sonnen has called out Jones, questioning his heart to fight numerous times, to which Jones has responded via twitter. Sonnen has shown that he has a strong bond with his followers and hard-core MMA community, and can speak to their hearts. After all, the long-time veteran ascended to his position through his trash-talking skills and a professional MMA record of 27-12-1.
This weekend’s showdown, UFC 152, is at the Air Canada Theater in Toronto, Canada.
