Average patience threshold is two seconds
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/23/2013 -- There is almost no margin for error when it comes to streaming entertainment, as it appears that viewers have near-zero patience for a screen to load.
Viewing-Streaming services such as Youtube, Hulu, or Netflix, win and lose hundreds-of-thousands, if not millions of viewers in seconds, it appears, as the attention span of the potential customers is less than that of a goldfish's memory span.
According to the new study released by the University of Massachusetts, half of the people who use high-speed/fiber-optic connection believe that five full seconds is too long of a waiting period.
YouTube has 4 billion hours of streaming video each month all on its own. That is merely a fraction of the online-streaming community total. For a business that is geared toward serving 800 million people per month, each second can count as important as the next, and with each second passing, people are liable to click away.
There are many users who do not find it worthwhile to wait more than a couple seconds before they begin to navigate away to another source.
“What we found was that people are pretty patient for up to two seconds,” Ramesh Sitaraman, science professor at the University of Massachusetts, told NPR News. “If you start out with, say, 100 users — if the video hasn’t started in five seconds, about one-quarter of those viewers are gone, and if the video doesn’t start in 10 seconds, almost half of those viewers are gone.”
Sitaraman's research has concluded that views begin to abandon a video within two seconds of it loading or stalling. With each additional second fo delay, 5.8% of the viewers will abandon the media.
Research data did note that viewers are more forgiving for a slow start to larger blocks of content, such as movies or larger chunks of video. When it comes to shorter video, such as news clips and snippets, they hold almost zero patience.
