Creator admits kinks still need to be worked out
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/12/2013 -- When it comes to late-night hunger, Jacknife is the one-man campus courier service which runs to the aid of students in need.
Jacknife started the courier venture earlier in the semester, and his idea is to be paid in exchange for the comfort and convenience of his fellow students. Jacknife is the alter-ego of Josh Martin, a computer-science freshman. His services include delivery of food to students stuck on campus, as well as printing out papers and necessary documents on a computer to assist rushed student-body members.
Martin stated that the business is still a “beta phase” project, and he needs to work the general kinks out. “I haven’t established any solid hours yet,” Martin said. “(I’m) still trying to get a following, getting the word out, and (I’ll) see what happens.”
He stated that the idea of the courier business came about in 2012 when his dorm life proved to be rather inconvenient for him.
“Late at night, (my former roommate and I) wanted something, like a Monster or Coke,” Martin said. “We would have to go all the way to the gas station, because everything would be closed on campus. We were always too lazy to do that.”
He decided what Texas State needed was a courier.
“The foundation of entrepreneurship is to find something that people don’t want to do that you’re good at doing, and you do it,” Martin said.
Martin believes the concept is strong enough based on enough students needing a courier service for various reasons; however, the business has been slow with only two customers in its first couple of weeks. Still, he is putting up fliers and advertising as much as possible. The idea certainly seems to resonate with students, with his Facebook likes approaching 100 “like already”
Among Martin's supporters is Sherri Mora, a political science senior lecturer. Martin talked to Mora following a class earlier in the semester and she encouraged him to keep at the idea to give it a chance to succeed.
“We talked about personal responsibility and ways to be engaged in our community,” Mora said. “(This includes) anything you can do in your college career to keep you engaged academically and socially and committed to the community.”
