Expert notes music can help lead the body in cadence
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/01/2013 -- A new study conducted by experts claims that playing classical music in the background during a workout can help relax the body. The relaxing of the muscles lowers the heart rate and blood pressure, and allows for a better and healthier workout, overall.
The U.K.-based neuroscientists, Jack Lewis, took the time to scour report of research to find a list of musically-themed advice for those who are trying to find a way to get a new edge in their workouts.
He noted that various studies have shown that music allows people to exercise slightly harder and longer, however, classical music had even more important added benefits. Studies have shown that compared to those other styles of music played, having classical music accompanying a workout helps the body find the ability to relax.
"Energetic but not overly-fast classical music can be ideal in the gym. Not only does upbeat music increase speed, strength and endurance, but the relaxing qualities of classical music appear to reduce heart rate, blood pressure and lower perceived exertion, at the same time," Lewis said.
"In addition, relaxing music has been shown to lower levels of cortisol in the body, the hormone associated with stress. I'd recommend Beethoven's Symphony No 4- Fourth Movement," he said. He also recommends finding music that will match the heartbeat, with faster beats being more useful for harder workouts. The faster beat is not only motivating, but also “instructs” the brain to exercise at a particular pace. Lewis even suggested Michael Jackson's 'Rock With You' for a heart rate of 116 beats per minute, which is the typical rate for a solid workout warmup.
When effort is increased, the body should be beating around 140 beats-per-minute, wherein German composer Ludwig van Beethoven will be more appropriate. When heading toward a 180 bpm, during the heaviest part of a workout, using items like Tinie Tempah's 'Pass Out' can provide what Lewis considers the necessary motivation. For a useful cooldown, Johnny Cash's 'Heart of Gold' is great for a cooldown session.
