Over 1 million Swedish males followed in quarter century study
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/31/2012 -- A new study indicates that men who had a low muscle strength during their teenage years are considered at increased risk of early death due to some major factors.
The Karolinska Institute in Sweden has discovered that men who have low muscle strength during youth have well-known risk factors for death, such as being overweight and high blood pressure.
The findings underline a need for young men to participate in activity that helps increase muscle mass and lower fat. That means getting regular exercise and improving muscle fitness, according to the authors who had their findings published in the November issue of BMJ.
The study used results found from 1 million Swedish males that ranged in age from 16 to 19. Each male was followed for 24 years, and the participants regularly underwent stress tests. Early death is defined as death before the age of 55.
The follow-up found that 2.3% of the men had died since the start of the study. The most common cause of death was suicide, at 22% of the 26,000, with cancer being 15% of the total. Cardiovascular disease accounted for less than 8% of deaths.
The men who were the strongest as teens were found to have a lowered chances of early death by 20-30%, and were 65% less likely to be diagnosed with a form of mental health disorder.
The death rates ranged from 122.3 per 1000,000 person years for those with the lowest muscle strength, and 86.9 per 100,000 for those with the greatest strength.
The study's findings do suggest that lower muscle strength in teens “is an emerging risk factor for major causes of death in young adulthood, such as suicide and cardiovascular diseases,” says Finn Rasmussen, who authored the study along with colleagues.
The underlying finding is clearly that exercise in male children and teens does play a part in overall health.
