Human Teeth an Evolutionary Sign of Health
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/16/2012 -- A new study confirms that human beings find white, evenly spaced teeth more attractive. But it goes further by explaining why it is the case.
Teeth, according to the study, are a sign of good health and genetic quality designed to help human beings choose a mate.
Researchers from Leeds and Central Lancashire universities digitally changed the color and spacing of models’ teeth in a series of photos. They applied three shades, a yellowish brown, healthy white, and the brilliant white some people attain through bleaching.
They then showed the images to 150 young men and women and asked how attractive they thought the models were.
Not surprisingly, while most did not find startlingly white shades of teeth particularly attractive, they found yellow teeth unattractive. They found widely spaced unattractive as well.
Regarding the condition of teeth, Leeds University psychologist Colin Hendrie said,
“When males are looking at females and when females are looking at females, there is quite a strong effect.”
He added, “Males are thinking about attraction and females are in competition with each other.”
Dr. Hendrie said women’s teeth reveal clues about age and how far she is from menopause, as well as childhood illnesses, diet and some genetic disorders.
The desire to display an attractive set of teeth might be behind women wearing lipstick, said Dr. Hendrie.
It is only but natural to think that a person would want to be good looking either it be when socializing with the opposite sex, or going for that very special job interview and having whiter teeth is always one of the best ways to do that, apart from the other things that count.
