San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/07/2012 -- A recent study released by Consumer Reports, has revealed that of the 90 percent of Americans who have switched from incandescent light bulbs to energy efficient CFLs or LEDs, a majority of them have opted to purchase the former despite the fact that Consumer reports have recommended LED’s offering superior light quality and efficiency.

On top of that, it has a long lasting life span and is mercury free, which means they do not require time to warm up, hence, are often Omni-directional.

The CFLs are cheaper and hence are more popular than LED lights. 23 percent of the people surveyed about their choice of lights said that price was a significant reason for them to go for the CFLs.

LED lights prices are falling and with time the trend may change from CFLs to LED lights as it is speculated that the LED lights prices will fall another $10 in the next two to three years.

Consumer reports have tested a total number of 755 energy-efficient 60 watt equivalent light bulbs included LEDs that cost around $25 to $60. Testers have found that the top $25 LED of the bunch could potentially save an impressive $130 in energy costs over the course of 23 years while the CFL’s save the consumers about $60.

The consumer watchdog has also identified four light bulb let-downs in addition to the pointing out the best and the brightest LEDs and CFLs.
