Omega-3 supplements and less consumption of fish may decrease Mercury levels found in body
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/28/2012 -- According to a northern European study, mercury and omega-3 fatty acids, which are both found in fish, seem to have completely opposite effects on heart health. Data taken from over 1,600 men from Sweden and Finland showed that the men with higher levels of mercury found in their systems had an increased risk of heart attacks. Those who had higher levels of omega-3s had a much lower risk.
Fish have always been considered a good part of a healthy diet, but figuring out the balance between some of the potential risks and benefits from has been unclear. Maria Wennberg, a researcher, noted that while the study wasn’t able to clarify a cause and effect, there were plenty of other ways to get the health benefits of fish oil naturally without getting too much mercury.
It has been advised to eat fish at least two to three times per week, eating at least one meal of fatty, non-predatory type fish (such as salmon) and a subsequent addition of predatory fish not to exceed once per week is recommended. A lot of predatory fish like shark and swordfish are higher up on the marine food chain, and for that the mercury content is exceptionally high from the environment in their tissues.
Mercury is said to be toxic to the nervous system, especially to the unborn and young children, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency does warn women of childbearing years and young children against eating any of the predatory fish.
It was merely suggested that, within the study, the two compounds might have an opposite effect on the heart, but that the results don’t necessarily prove the high mercury levels were to be completely blamed for increased risk of heart attack, but that they were merely linked.
