San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/11/2013 -- A new study that was commissioned by the Sault Stre. Marie PUC by Ispos Reid has noted that the issue with water is not on the top of many residents mind.

A mere 3% of those who responded to questions mentioned drinking water as a top concern when it came to city issues, according to the study.

Over three-fourths of residents (76%) are aware that changes to the city's drinking water are on the horizon. Seventy-seven percent did notice a change in tap water, while over half of those 77% felt the water's taste and odor is worse than before.

Satisfaction of the quality of water is low for the city, dipping below 50% overall. However, once the resident is informed of why there was a change, 64% say that the water is acceptable in its current form.

Nearly 70% of the residents opposed the PUC adding any chemicals to the drinking water to improve either taste or odor.

The overall findings of the survey will be handled and discussed in a city council meeting held on Monday. Michael Howell, Senior Research Manager with Ipsos Reid will be chairing the meeting.

Research has indicated that the present form of public support is insufficient to undertake any of the remedies that have been tossed around when it comes to improving the taste and odor of drinking water. According to the study, the majority of the residents are not in favor of any of the proposed remedies. There is a $5 million per month price-tag on removing the smell of the water, or for the removal of any trace of foul taste.
