Moms get sucked into concerns they are not crafting enough after browsing Pinterest
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/13/2013 -- For mothers, the use of social media is a double-edged sword, offering both a curse and a blessing simultaneously. A mom can go to sites such as popular social media hubs like Facebook and Pinterest, which is great. However, the images that are seen of other households' harmony can put strain on moms.
A TODAY Moms' survey of nearly 7,000 mothers within the United States found that over 40% feel that they sometimes suffer from Pinterest stress. The concern of the moms is that they are simply adding enough aesthetic to their households, like they think they should. Many mothers spend too much time browsing photos of handcrafted items like party favors or birthday decoration designs. An over-inundation of such sites can cause severe stress for some mothers.
“It tricks you into thinking that everyone is baking their own bread,” said Jenna Andersen, who is the mother of two, blogger and creator of the popular Pinterest Fail blog. The website shows failed crafting attempts that were inspired by Pinterest submissions. Anderson claims she is still a fan of the site, but she also enjoys the reality that not everyone can be so darn crafty.
Anderson does not just poke fun at others on her site, but also at herself. “It was just a little party, nothing I’d put on Pinterest” -- as if simply throwing an enjoyable kids’ party isn’t enough anymore.
“We have a hard time enjoying our own experiences because we feel it’s not worthy of this invisible judge,” Andersen said. “It’s so easy to get depressed. You start to feel like your entire life has to be like a magazine all the time.”
“Stop the Pinsanity”, says author and mother of three, Glennon Doyle Melton.“We have to lower our expectations,” said Melton, 37, author of “Carry On, Warrior: Thoughts on Life Unarmed.” “Being a parent is so physically and emotionally and mentally exhausting. To add 17 layers of perfection and cutesiness? I don’t know of any study that ever said kids turn out better if they have rainbow colored birthday cakes. Why are we doing this to ourselves?”
