4G partially explains separation of connectability
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/31/2012 -- Manhattan mobile internet speeds are reported as four times faster than London’s, according to recent findings.
A survey spanning 17,000 connections in the two metropolises were the source of the findings. Independent data testing company RootMetrics released the findings regarding New York’s download and upload speed being “significantly faster”.
The average upload speed for the London was 1Mbps, while New York was at 4 Mbps. London’s 2.3 Mbps for download was strikingly slower than New York’s 8.5 Mbps.
The introduction of 4G in the Big Apple earlier this year can explain some of the vast separation. London will see 4G in at the end of the month. It is not clear how much of the distance between the two will be covered by the introduction.
Essex had the fastest speed in the southeast of England, where Blackwood Ave. in Chingford Mount had speeds up to 12.95 Mbps.
Three network in London was the best overall mobile operator in the area. O2 was second, Vodafone was third, and Orange was fourth. T-Mobile came in at fifth overall.
Vodafone’s connection seemed highly dependent upon area, with a strong signal in central London, which then tapered out in surrounding areas.
RootMetrics’ CEO and President Bill Moore stated that, “With mobile internet use soaring, having a fast, reliable data connection has become as important as having a consistent mobile signal. It’s quite amazing to find such a vast disparity in services between two cities that are rival destinations for global business and tourism.”
He added, “Are Londoners getting a good deal on their mobile phones contracts? It’s hard to say. For customers who use a phone primarily as a phone, there’s little to differentiate each network. For mobile internet however, there are clearly significant issues with specific networks in specific areas.”
