In congruence with a national movement to deter children from smoking
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/04/2013 -- An Australian teacher has taken it upon himself to cataloging his efforts to quit smoking.
The teacher has set up Twitter and Facebook accounts and has vocally backed the Australian law passed that forces cigarettes to use plain packaging.
Luke Pearson was 13 years old when he started smoking, and by 20 years of age, he was getting to over one pack per day. He stated in an interview, “My father was a fairly heavy smoker and like any young bloke I watched him smoke all the time,' he told AAP.”
Pearson continued, “One night I snuck out to his truck parked out the front, pinched one of his Winnie (Winfield) reds and coughed my guts up horribly.”
Pearson is now 32, and is an Aboriginal from Newcastle. He recently ditched the habit on Friday, a day before the Australian government's world-first plain packaging laws were put into place officially.
His attempt to quit is not linked to the law, according to Pearson himself. The law forces cigarette manufacturers to produce olive-colored packets with a graphic health warning on each.
Pearson believes the packets may help kids from starting up on the habit, which in the past was often considered cool by particular kids.
“We liked our fathers' winnies in the same way that we liked our fathers' cars and our fathers' political parties - because they were so easily recognizable,” Mr Pearson continued.
“There will still be things that attract kids to smoking, but the packaging won't be part of it.”
Pearson writes about his attempt to quit smoking on the no-smokes Twitter handle. The handle is part of a the Menzies School of Health Research's No Smokes effort, which is targeting the education of young Indigenous Australians.
He also blogs on the No Smokes Facebook page, and as of has completed four days of smoke-free living.
