UK has more redheads than anywhere else
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/05/2013 -- Couples are not being offered a test that can detect a red-hair gene to see whether or not the “ginger gene” is present in either carrier.
Scientists will study visitors genes to determine the likelihood of the so-called “ginger gene” in individuals at a heritage show in London being held in February.
The test is comprised of a saliva test, and experts will take the time to search persons DNA for three common variants in the MC1R gene, which has been noted as a root cause of the red-hair color in individuals.
The test will be made wholly available to the public at the Who Do You Think You Are? Live exhibition at the London Olympia in February.
Nearly 40% of British citizens are thought to carry the mutation, regardless of if that individual exhibits the gene his/herself. The fact the gene is dormant can lead to quite a surprise when it comes to heiring a son or daughter that expresses the gene with vibrant red hair. Only one in four individuals who carry the gene actually express it outright.
Children who have but one parent who carries the gene will not be red-headed, but will still carry the gene through their genetic tree.
Dr. Jim Wilson, who sits as chief scientist at BritainsDNA, explained: "This means that families can carry a variant for generations, and when one carrier has children with another carrier, a red-headed baby can appear seemingly out of nowhere."
Nearly one in 10 within Ireland have red hair, despite 40% carrying the variant. In Scotland a mere 13% have red hair, while in England 6% are carriers.
Ginger hair is more common in the United Kingdom than in Europe, wherein only 1.3% have red-hair. As for the rest of the world, only one of every 200 persons has expressed red hair.
