The CCGNJ Supports Vets Struggling with Disordered Gambling

Hamilton, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/05/2017 -- On November 11th, the country observed Veterans Day, the official U.S. holiday dedicated to honoring the friends, family, and neighbors that have served in the United States Armed Forces. The Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey, along with the rest of the nation, expressed appreciation for veterans' service. The CCGNJ would like to remind the public that veterans can often be especially susceptible to developing a gambling disorder.

Military service can be rife with stress and anxiety. In general, day-to-day life back at home lacks the stress and tension of the daily military routine, let alone intense combat situations. For that reason, adjusting back to the civilian world sometimes proves to be no easy task.

Gambling can be a source of distraction and escape for both active service members and veterans. The adrenaline surge veterans may experience when gambling can feel similar to the surge of stress hormone produced in combat. Subsequently, the "rush" induced by illegal sports betting in Atlantic City, scratch-off lottery tickets, online gaming, and other forms of gambling can provide a veteran with intense feelings that they might have difficulty finding in their new civilian life.

"As veterans assimilate back into civilian life, it is imperative to support them with compassion and understanding," said Neva Pryor, Executive Director of the CCGNJ. She added, "The CCGNJ offers help to disordered gamblers from all walks of life."

The CCGNJ offers support, treatment, and hope for veterans and anyone else struggling with gambling for sports in Monmouth, NJ or any other form of gambling. Both disordered gamblers and their loved ones can reach out to their gambling help hotline, 1-800-GAMBLER, for confidential guidance. Alternatively, they can visit them at their website, https://800gambler.org/.
