The plastic outer shell of the BMW i3 has won the Automotive SPE Award 2013 in the category Exterior Body. The roof trims of the car are one part of the exterior body and made of the thermoplastic elastomers THERMOLAST A by KRAIBURG TPE.
Waldkraiburg, Germany -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/07/2014 -- The selection of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) for the category - Exterior Body took account for sustainability, complexity of the overall system as well as the precision within the tolerances of the plastic outer shell. The roof trims are part of the shell and are composed of weatherproof TPE. The product line THERMOLAST® A by KRAIBURG TPE was chosen for this purpose. The thermoplastic elastomers have a sealing function in-between the roof and the door frame of the car.
Resistance to weathering and bonding to PC/ABS
THERMOLAST® A distinguishes itself by an extreme UV- and weathering resistance as well as its bonding to PC/ABS. The thermoplastic elastomers can be processed to a precise and even surface without welding line. This is achieved due to the excellent flow properties of the TPE. THERMOLAST® A compounds are processed easily and precisely by 2-component injection molding. In this processing step, they make a very good bonding to the hard component PC/ABS. By means of a multi-component injection molding process the best bonding properties are achieved. Additional assembly steps are no longer necessary and the cycle time of the component is reduced.
Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) have become an indispensable part of automotive engineering. They have a low weight, are environment-friendly and become more important due to their extraordinary mechanical properties and the efficient processability by multi-component injection molding.
