Drop in vegetable purchases, and sedentary lifestyle, to blame
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/08/2013 -- In a new national obesity study, the epidemic appears to have no sign of slowing. “Obese” is now approaching the “normal weight” for England, according to the new research.
One in ten children are now being labeled as obese by the start of their schooling years, while there are sharp rises in the total number of individuals who have been admitted to hospital for various obesity-related conditions.
In 2011, nearly 24% of all men and 26% of all women are now considered under the classification of obese. The total obese and overweight individuals now constitutes 65% of men and 58% of women that are heavier than what is considered healthy.
Graham Rowan, who sits as chairman of the Obesity Management Association, has issued a warning regarding the epidemic, and notes it seems to be “spiraling out of control”.
Tim Straughan, who is chief executive of the Health and Social Care Information Center stated the obesity rates have coincided with the decline in general healthy eating and lack of exercise. The HSCIC is in charge of climbing data on the issue. It should also be noted that the general availability to food, along with prepackaged and additive-rich foods is also likely adding to the general obesity numbers.
Household purchases for fresh and non-processed foods have fallen in the last half-decade. Purchases of fruit had individually fallen 4.1% lower in 2011 as compared to 2008. The total volume of vegetables that were purchased dropped 2.4% in the half-decade, and included 6.6% of a drop for green vegetables (fresh).
