More homes tuning into Online Streaming TV services such as Netflix, Apple
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/29/2012 -- The number of households receiving traditional television service is falling, but they are not giving up their TVs.
Many homes without traditional television service use alternatives such as Netflix, Apple, or satellite tv for pc – a senior official at the Nielsen Co. said. Three-quarters of the 5 million homes that do not receive programming through cable, satellite, or antenna still possess televisions.
The report reveals changes in how viewers receive TV service. Three years ago more than 99% of homes watched TV using traditional signals, but that number is now less than 96%.
The economic climate is one reason, Nielsen suggested. The service is seen as expendable in the sluggish economy.Nielsen is considering changing what it classifies as a “television household” to include those that receive nontraditional service, said Dounia Turrill, Senior Vice President for Client Insights.
The average consumer watched television 2% less during the first quarter of 2012 than during the previous year, Nielsen found. But consumers spent more time watching programming from the Internet or recorded on DVRs. Consumers typically use game consoles 14 minutes per day, and video is accessible on many of these machines.“Gaming devices are becoming entertainment hubs,” Turrill said.Consumers 12-17 years of age spend 22 hours a week on average watching television, but those 65 or older watch for almost 48 hours, according to Nielsen.
