Hialeah Gardens, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/03/2014 -- Triamcinolone acetonide is a glucocorticoid that is commonly combined with other drugs and used to treat allergic rhinitis and various dermatitis conditions in cats and dogs and inflammation due to asthma in horses. Inflammation related to ear infections is also alleviated with this drug. Triamcinolone can also be put in the eye. It is also used to help with pain and lameness due to osteoarthritis and can be given as an injection. In infections where the animals immune response may result in more problems or death, triamcinolone can help modulate how the animals respond to the other drugs.

It should not be given in the presence of a viral infection and animals with chronic renal disease, Cushing’s and stomach ulcers should not be given the drug. Side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, becoming aggressive and other behavioral changes, decreased appetite, becoming more thirsty and panting excessively. In Panalog®, it is combined with thriostreptin, nystatin and triamcinolone. The drug alone given as a tablet or injectable is called Vetalog®.
