Redirects surfers to predetermined websites
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/01/2013 -- Internet systems in India are under spam attacks that “hiack” search engine requests and lead to slow browsing and opening of suspect websites, according to the country's premiere cyber security agency in a released advisory.
A trojan virus called “bamital” has been found in the country's internet network, says Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In).
"It has been observed that Trojan Bamital is propagating widely. Bamital is a clickjacking trojan which modifies the search results and redirects users to advertisement links.”
"Bamital is a malware designed to hijack search engine results," the advisory said. “Clicking onto any of the displayed search results redirects users to “attacker controlled command-and-control server,” it stated.
These Bamital servers then connect unsuspecting users to advertisement servers that redirect results to attacker's chosen websites. In essence, the system has the ability to click an advertisement without actually interacting with the advert. The result of the trojan is poor user experience along with increased risk of further malware infections, according to security agents.
"If the Bamital servers are unable to serve customized website, tainted search results will be displayed to user's browser.
"Bamital also intercepts web browser traffic and prevents access to certain security-related websites by modifying the Hosts file," it said.
The Agency noted that internet surfers should utilized trusted anti-virus software and mechanisms for handling the malicious software.
"Bamital has primarily propagated through drive-by-downloads and maliciously modified files in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. Users impacted by this botnet, will be notified the next time they try and run a search using their preferred provider. Infected computers will be redirected to a Microsoft website," the advisory said.
