Wilnecote, Tamworth -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/22/2016 -- A school in Eastbourne, east Sussex has changed the way we protect our children and in the head teachers own words has decided to "tear off the cotton wool from around our kids and cast it into the flames". This school has taken the very brave step in teaching children how to face dangerous objects and situations in order to build their bravery and confidence.
Children at this particular state school have lessons in using sharp knives, saws, and even air rifles. They are taught how to cook and melt metal over an open fire. Head teacher, Mike Fairclough, who is the son of late actor Gordon Fairclough, says that this method of educating children makes them much more confident in facing dangerous or scary situations going forward.
The Eastbourne junior school rents out 120 acres of marshland where they keep water buffalo, beehives, chickens, sheep and goats. The children learn how to handle an air rifle and hunt and are sent out in all weathers to do so. But should children really be learning how to handle guns? It goes without saying that children are always more intrigued to do things they are told they cannot. Handling air guns without any prior training is quite clearly a dangerous situation, so surely teaching these children how to use them avoids them being put into this situation later in life?
The use of air guns in events such as clay pigeon shooting is just one of many ways to get people outside all year round, and if children can get involved then there really is no excuse to be cooped up inside in front of a TV.
